Life with a newborn baby can feel anything but relaxing at times! There’s so much involved in caring for them that you might wish that you had an extra pair or hands (or three)! I know I did as a new mum when each of my boys arrived.
My best advice when it comes to newborn babies would be to relax, take your time and just go with the flow, which is also the exact approach I use when I’m photographing newborns...
Experience has taught me that the secret to a comfortable and relaxed newborn photoshoot experience for both the baby and the parents is a calm environment and a willingness to embrace whatever happens during the shoot.
Keep reading to find out more about how I ensure my clients enjoy a relaxed newborn photoshoot experience at my home-based studio here in Boston Spa, near Leeds.
My newborn photoshoots are 100% baby-led since the comfort of your baby is the most important thing of all. It stands to reason that when your baby is comfortable and happy, then the experience as a whole can be more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
My approach is quite simply this...when your baby is happy and content, I’ll pose and photograph them. When they need a break – whether to be fed, have their bottom changed or to have a yawn or stretch, we stop for a while. They call the shots!
Stopping and starting is completely normal, and sometimes it may be more than an hour into the session before I’ve even taken one photograph.
Since they’re unlikely to be settled the entire time, it’s important for you to realise that a photo session for a newborn can often take several hours. Because of this, I only ever do one newborn session per day.
As a result, you’ll be able to relax knowing that you won’t feel at all rushed. We can take whatever time we need to get the baby photographs you’re after.

If that surprised you, perhaps this will too... My role is not just to be your baby photographer.
Once we’re ready to get started, after the time we’ll spend together at the beginning of the session chatting and finalising your choices for colours and any props we plan to use, I’ll also help to settle and handle your baby into position for the photographs.
I’ll gladly spend many minutes – sometimes a lot longer - helping them to settle in between shots, and will then carefully place your baby into position before even thinking about reaching for my camera.
This part is so important to get right which is why I’m so happy to spend the necessary time to ensuring that your baby is relaxed and ready for their newborn photo session.
Another reason that you can be assured of a relaxed newborn photoshoot experience is that I’ve photographed many babies over the years, and have completed extensive professional training too. I’m also a mum of three myself.
Thanks to all this experience, I know how to safely handle and support their tiny bodies and can assure you that I will always care for your newborn as if he or she were my own. You can sit back safe in the knowledge that I have your baby’s safety and welfare in the forefont of my mind at all times.
I’ve written previously about newborn photography and baby safety, so if you’d like to know more about my safe newborn photography practices do have a look at that. By the way, I consider this essential reading for any new parents looking to hire a baby photographer as this is important stuff!
A relaxed experience is also guaranteed when you choose me as your Leeds newborn photographer because my photography studio is a welcoming space where you can sit and watch, or even have a snooze if you’d like!
Drinks and snacks are available for you to help yourself to and my sofa is a lovely little spot to rest, and put up your feet, while being close enough to the action so you’re still involved. Feel free to make yourself at home!

If you’re looking for a baby photographer in or near Leeds, Harrogate or York and want a relaxing newborn photoshoot experience, I hope you’ll have realised by now that you need look no further. I pride myself on both the high quality portraits I create and the overall experience you have during your time spent with me.
What I’ve tried to stress in this article is that you can relax during your baby’s photo session because there are absolutely no expectations for them to perform in a particular way.
Each baby will act according to how they feel on the day of the photoshoot, and that’s absolutely fine. We can work with whatever happens. Even if they’re not keen on being handled much, I can absolutely still create you many wonderful baby portraits.
Naturally, every baby I’ve had through my doors over the years has been completely unique and no two newborn photoshoots are exactly the same. When you realise this, hopefully it will allay any fears you might have around whether your little one will do the ’right’ thing during their photoshoot.
By knowing that there are no set expectations on either you or your baby when you choose me as your Leeds newborn photographer, I hope that this helps you as you prepare for the session? You truly are in for a relaxing experience!
Your baby’s first photo shoot will lead to the creation of many lovely baby and family portraits that I know you’ll enjoy both now - in this exciting phase as a parent of a newborn - and just as much, if not more, in the years to come when they are all grown up!
