Studio Portrait Photographer of the Year, British Institute of Professional Photography - Yorkshire Region -
Unless you’ve experienced a newborn photoshoot before, it’s likely that you have many questions about the process and may be wondering what you can expect from the experience.
If this is how you feel, don’t worry at all. I’ve got you covered! Naturally if this is your first baby, you may be completely new to newborn baby photography - many of my clients are. Indeed you may not even have known that it is a 'thing'! Rest assured, I’m used to answering lots of questions about photographing newborn babies, even the ones that you might feel silly asking.
While I aim to offer plenty of information here on my website so that you are as informed as possible, I realise that nothing beats seeing it for yourself. For this reason, I have put together a video which takes you behind the scenes during a newborn photoshoot with me.
If you’re considering me as your newborn photographer, this should give you a taste of what you can expect.

Baby F came to see me at just 9 days old, and his parents kindly allowed us to video the session in order to capture a typical newborn photoshoot on camera.
The shoot lasted a couple of hours, but we’ve squeezed the essence of the shoot into a video that lasts just over a minute, which I think is probably enough for you to get the idea!
I’m delighted to now be able to share it with you! Click on the video below to watch.
My newborn photoshoots are completely bespoke to you and your family, and we’ll plan your session together in advance so that there are no surprises on the day.
You’ll be given clear instruction in advance on where to come for the shoot and about what time to arrive, and what to bring.
On the day of your shoot, as you see in the video, you’ll come to my home-based studio, located in Boston Spa, Leeds.
I'll show you to my photography studio and encourage you to make yourselves at home. Drinks and snacks are available free of charge throughout the shoot.
Should you be running late for any reason, please just let me know by phone or text on the day. I know that there are all sorts of things that could prevent you getting out of the house on time with your brand new baby and for this reason I never book more than one newborn photoshoot in per day.
I won’t put the kettle on until I know you are round the corner!
All newborn photography sessions are baby-led, meaning that your little one rules the show! We only start when he or she is comfortable and settled.
After your arrival, I’ll finish setting up the studio and we’ll have a chat. I’ll remind you of what’s going to happen during the shoot, and you can tell me about your little one.
Nothing is rushed, particularly this first part where your little one is getting used to the new environment and the sounds and smells of the studio. Similarly, throughout the session, whenever they need a nappy change or a feed then we do that before continuing.
With all the preparation done, now we’re ready to make a start!

Three ways to get a newborn baby to sleep
During your baby’s newborn photoshoot, I’ll be the one settling them for the most part, which means that you can sit back and relax while I carefully soothe them to sleep and position them for the photos.
We’ll have already discussed the colours and any particular preferences you have in advance, so I’ll incorporate those throughout the shoot.
Once you’ve seen the full array of coloured wraps and newborn photoshoot props that I have in the studio though, if you change your mind or want me to include additional colours or props then you can just let me know.
Be prepared for the fact that the newborn photoshoot itself takes a few hours because we’ll work around your baby, and some photos can take a while to set up.

Once the baby portraits have been taken, we’ll then create some family shots. I’ll pose and guide you on how to hold your baby, making it as easy and as fuss-free as possible for you.
Although you may feel reluctant to be photographed, trust me that you’ll come to appreciate these family portraits and will be so glad that you had them taken during your baby’s newborn photoshoot.
Since your baby is so small, I often try to convey this by photographing them in the hands of the parents. It’s amazing in years to come to look back at how much they will have grown!

Most parents book at least 3-6 months in advance, and we pencil in a date that falls a couple of weeks after your baby’s due date. If your baby has already been born though, give me a call and I’ll do my best to fit you in.
I can’t wait to meet you and your little one!
