Celebrate your exciting next chapter with a pregnancy photoshoot

Andrea Thornton • Mar 15, 2022

Whether you’re expecting your first baby or your fourth, your pregnancy deserves to be celebrated. An increasingly popular way of doing so is with a pregnancy photoshoot.

Over the years, I’ve had the honour of photographing many Yorkshire women who were excitingly looking forward to the birth of their babies.

These mums-to-be all wanted beautiful portraits of their growing bump as a memento to treasure.

Why book a pregnancy photoshoot?

There are several reasons why you may wish to book a pregnancy photoshoot:

Firstly, there’s nothing more special than the imminent arrival of a baby

Your pregnancy is a time of great excitement for you and your family. Your unborn child is already loved and cared for, and so it’s natural to want to pay tribute to them as you eagerly await their arrival into the world.

Secondly, pregnancy will soon be a distant memory

The nine months of pregnancy tend to fly by, although I know from experience that those final weeks of waiting can seem to drag! In relative terms though, it’s such a short phase of your life – one that you’ll likely forget once your baby arrives.

It’s always a pleasure to photograph this stage of life for my clients so that they can remember it in the years ahead.

Thirdly, you may regret it if you don’t!

Many second-time or third-time mums who come to me for a pregnancy photoshoot have told me that they regretted not having a maternity shoot the first time around.

As they’ve come to realise, maternity photographs give you the opportunity to remember your blossoming bump in all its glory!

While you may well take snapshots of your growing bump on your phone at home, obviously these cannot compare to a photograph which is professionally lit, styled and posed – a piece of artwork worthy of hanging on your walls at home.

Should you choose a studio maternity photoshoot or an outdoor maternity photoshoot?

If you’re considering booking a pregnancy photoshoot, it’s worth knowing that I offer both indoor and outdoor shoots, although we’d only consider venturing outside in the milder months and if the weather is suitable.

My indoor, studio-based maternity photoshoots are available all year round and offer complete comfort and privacy. They’re held here in my home-based photography studio in Leeds.

My outdoor maternity photoshoots are held at a beautiful location of your choice – perhaps in a park or field – and in the early evening when the sun is low, and the lighting is warm and flattering.

What happens during a maternity photoshoot?

My pregnancy photoshoots are relaxed and tailored to your preferences.

As a mother myself, I know that in that final trimester you’re likely to be feeling tired and uncomfortable, so we’ll go at your pace. Your comfort throughout the shoot is my number one priority.

We’ll spent up to an hour together creating a variety of portraits.

If you’re having a studio-based shoot, this is enough time for a few outfit changes if you wished.

If you’re having an outdoor maternity shoot, you’ll stick to wearing just the one outfit for practical reasons – usually an elegant, well-fitted maternity dress which shows your gorgeous curves off without being too revealing.

Do I have to reveal my bare bump?

If you want to reveal your baby bump in your maternity photos you can do - I always encourage skin shots when we’re in the studio - but if you’d rather not, then that’s fine too!

If you’re feeling nervous about getting semi-naked, we can conceal it if you’d prefer. You can be partly dressed, and we can get creative with accessories such as sheer fabric wraps and beautiful chiffon materials. We’ll hint at your rounded tummy without showing it completely to the camera.

When outdoors, maternity photos are not revealing and generally the bump is kept covered up. Instead, these sessions are more about you, and you and your partner, being together in beautiful surroundings.

I’ll photograph you walking, sitting and holding hands. All photos are natural, happy and relaxed.

What style of photos can you expect if you choose me as your maternity photographer?

In terms of style, my pregnancy photos are simple and natural, but with an artistic flare!

The photos I’m sharing here are recent examples of my maternity portraits and should give you a good indication of what you could expect from your own maternity photoshoot with me.

Who can attend a pregnancy photoshoot?

Partners are welcome to attend your pregnancy photoshoot, as are little ones if you already have a child.

As well as the photos of you alone, we can get some photos of you all together and these are always nice to have for the family photo album.
